My work with the charity Help for Heroes

Since January 2021, I’ve had the absolute privilege of working with Help for Heroes—supporting military veterans in finding their voice, their passion, and their confidence through photography. What started as a few camera workshops during lockdown quickly turned into something far more meaningful: a shared journey of healing and creative expression.

Over the past 4.5 years, I’ve met the most incredible individuals—each with their own story, struggles, and strengths. Many had never picked up a camera before. But once they did, something clicked. I’ve seen shy, withdrawn veterans step into the light—both behind the camera and in their lives.

I’ve taught over 150 veterans, many of whom were struggling to connect with others, even with themselves. Through confidence building photography courses, they’ve begun to re-engage with the world around them, feel safe in their surroundings, and see their value reflected back through the lens.

Confidence Building Photography

British Photography Awards

One of my students, Claire, was shortlisted for the British Photography Awards. She has a remarkable gift for capturing emotion in a way that resonates deeply. Her portrait of her partner, John—an Armed Forces veteran living with advanced Primary Progressive MS—does more than document. It reveals the often unseen truths of disability and resilience.

Claire’s storytelling flourished through the support of my confidence building courses, which helped her grow both technically and creatively. From mastering depth of field and light, to exploring black-and-white composition, the sessions gave her the tools—and confidence—to share her vision with the world.

As Claire explained, ‘we often celebrate successes, but rarely witness the battles that come before them. Her photograph brings those hidden struggles into the light with honesty and grace.’

Exhibitions

Exhibition at Andover

Ian, a veteran from Andover, created his very own photo-art exhibition just four years after being medically discharged following 26 years of service.

Living with epilepsy, Ian faced rejection—even from volunteer roles. But after joining my photography course, he found validation and self-belief. “It boosted my self-confidence,” he said. His work, and his story, even earned him an interview on ITV News—and he handled it brilliantly.

Ian’s journey is just one example of how creativity and confidence can go hand in hand.

"I’ve got validation. It boosted my self-confidence."

I’ve been doing a little bit of photography over the years, just to keep myself occupied because I had very little to do. Last year, I took one of Help for Heroes’ photographic courses and some of the feedback I received from Siorna, the course leader, just blew me away. I’ve got validation. It boosted my self-confidence.”

Exhibition at Stockport War Memorial Gallery

The courses I provided also led to a collective exhibition at the Stockport War Memorial Gallery, where veterans proudly showcased their work. For many, it was the first time they’d ever seen their photographs printed and displayed. A milestone made possible by our journey in confidence building photography

Mental Health & Confidence

Moving Forward After Depression

Jean and Jo, twin sisters affected by the ban on being gay in the UK military, found hope and healing through our photography community. Their journey—from isolation to sharing their art and supporting others—shows how confidence-building photography can create a path forward.

"I now see life in colour."

I now see life in colour rather than black and white. Taking part in the photography course got me out in the open air, enjoying nature which helped my wellbeing. Getting to know my camera to its full extent has given me the confidence to try new challenges.”

Higher Education and New Careers

Simon, from the Wirral, once found it difficult to mix in public. Even joining our group walks was a big step. But after completing my beginner confidence building photography course, he applied for and completed both his HNC and HND, and is now working toward a BA in Photography. Today, he works as a stills photographer on film and TV sets, with placements at Everton, ITV, and Sky. I could not be more proud of him and his updates are always a highlight of my week!

"It has been good for my mental health as it’s given me something to concentrate on."

“Usually, I don’t mix with people outside of my family. I am isolated, so to head to meet the others in the Peak District was a big deal,” he said.

“It has been good for my mental health as it’s given me something to concentrate on.”

Feelings of Self Worth and Value

It’s not just about the awards or exhibitions (though those are incredible achievements!). What matters most is what happens behind the lens. I’ve seen veterans begin to smile again, talk about dreams again, and believe in themselves again. My courses encourage them to think about their style, reflect on what they love to capture, and share their unique view of the world.

This kind of growth – the mental health boost, the courage to put themselves out there, and the rediscovery of personal worth – is what makes this work so meaningful.

"Made life enjoyable again."

“My photography skills have progressed enormously on the programmes, in fact, I am enjoying the training so much I have invested in a new DSLR camera! I’m also getting out and about a lot more often, this has vastly improved my moods and made life enjoyable again.

“My wife and daughter have commented that they have not seen me so engaged in something for a very long time.”

The Confidence Behind the Camera

Confidence has always been at the heart of my work. I first picked up a camera searching for the very thing I lacked—hoping to see myself more clearly and kindly.

That journey led me to support others in finding their own confidence, first through taking good photos of them, then through helping them embrace their bodies, and now, through empowering military veterans to tell their stories with strength and pride. Photography isn’t just what I do—it’s how I help people see the best in themselves.

Working with veterans through confidence building photography has been the most rewarding chapter of my career. These courses have built more than just skills—they’ve created a community. A safe, inspiring space where people support each other, rediscover joy, and see life through a more confident lens. I’m proud of every step they’ve taken, and it’s been an honour to walk beside them—camera in hand.
