My work with the charity Help for Heroes

Since January 2021, I’ve had the privilege of working with Help for Heroes, supporting military veterans in finding their voice, purpose, and confidence through photography. What began as a few online workshops during lockdown has grown into a powerful programme of healing, community, and creative expression—delivered through what I call confidence-building photography.

Over the past four and a half years, I’ve worked with more than 150 veterans across the UK. Many arrive withdrawn or isolated, having never picked up a camera before. But through guided sessions, group photo walks, and exhibitions, I’ve seen them reconnect—with themselves, each other, and the world around them.

Impact Stories

British Photography Awards

Claire, one of my students, was shortlisted for the British Photography Awards. Her portrait of her partner—an Armed Forces veteran living with advanced MS—moved audiences by portraying resilience with dignity.

Through the course, Claire gained confidence with composition, lighting, and storytelling. From mastering depth of field and light, to exploring black-and-white composition, the sessions gave her the tools—and confidence—to share her vision with the world.

As Claire explained, “we often celebrate successes, but rarely witness the battles that come before them”. Her photograph brings those hidden struggles into the light with honesty and grace.

Reclaiming Identity After Medical Discharge

After 26 years of service and a medical discharge due to epilepsy, Ian struggled to find purpose—even being rejected from volunteer roles. Joining my course helped him rediscover self-worth. “It boosted my self-confidence,” he said. He went on to create his own photo-art exhibition and was featured on  ITV News.

"I’ve got validation. It boosted my self-confidence."

I’ve been doing a little bit of photography over the years, just to keep myself occupied because I had very little to do. Last year, I took one of Help for Heroes’ photographic courses and some of the feedback I received from Siorna, the course leader, just blew me away. I’ve got validation. It boosted my self-confidence.”

Healing from Historic Injustice

Twin sisters Jo and Jean, impacted by the military gay ban, used photography to process decades of trauma. Their journey—from isolation to sharing their art and supporting others—shows how confidence-building photography can create a path forward.

"I now see life in colour."

I now see life in colour rather than black and white. Taking part in the photography course got me out in the open air, enjoying nature which helped my wellbeing. Getting to know my camera to its full extent has given me the confidence to try new challenges.”

From Isolation to Industry

Simon was once too anxious to attend group activities. But after joining my beginner course, he progressed to an HNC, then HND, and is now studying for a BA in photography. Today, he works as a stills photographer on TV and film sets, with credits at Everton FC, ITV, and Sky. I am so proud of him and his updates are always a highlight of my week!

"It has been good for my mental health as it’s given me something to concentrate on."

“Usually, I don’t mix with people outside of my family. I am isolated, so to head to meet the others in the Peak District was a big deal,” he said.

Finding Joy Again

It’s not just about the awards or exhibitions (though those are incredible achievements!). What matters most is what happens behind the lens. I’ve seen veterans begin to talk about dreams and believe in themselves again. My courses encourage them to think about their style, reflect on what they love to capture, and share their unique view of the world.

"This has vastly improved my moods and made life enjoyable again."

“My photography skills have progressed enormously on the programmes, in fact, I am enjoying the training so much I have invested in a new DSLR camera! I’m also getting out and about a lot more often, this has vastly improved my moods and made life enjoyable again.

My wife and daughter have commented that they have not seen me so engaged in something for a very long time.”

Innovation and Reach

What sets this programme apart is its blend of technical teaching, therapeutic benefit, and creative storytelling. I designed the curriculum to be accessible to total beginners, but layered with depth to encourage personal exploration and growth.

Since launching the first course, I’ve grown the initiative into a long-term partnership with Help for Heroes, securing  gallery exhibitions (including Stockport War Memorial Gallery), and built an alumni network of veterans who continue to create and support one another.

The Confidence Behind the Camera

Confidence has always been at the heart of my work. I first picked up a camera searching for the very thing I lacked—hoping to see myself more clearly and kindly. That journey now informs everything I do: helping people see their beauty, tell their story, and find their power, whether through portraiture or peer-led group work.

Photography isn’t just what I do—it’s how I help people see the best in themselves.

Working with veterans through confidence-building photography has been the most rewarding chapter of my career. These courses don’t just teach photography—they create community. They provide a safe, creative space for people to rediscover joy, self-worth, and possibility.
